DJID certification for automotive radar

Radar stands for radio detection and ranging. This technology allows to detect particular object by utilizing a radio wave. Therefore, the main function of radar is for detecting one object using radio waves and now it is being implemented in various industry. One of the applications of radar technology is used as automotive radar in most of vehicle nowadays.

In this article we will discuss all about automotive radar and its regulatory control in Indonesia.

How radar works?

Radar technology will emit a radio wave and when it hits an object, some waves will be reflected back to the radar receiver. Based on the detected waves, the radar will extract information related to the object based on the reflected waves that have been received.

The working principle of radar in measuring and recognizing objects is in the following way:

Distance measurement

Radar emits radio waves toward an object and receives the reflected radio waves to determine the distance to the object. Specifically, radar measures the time between the the emitted radio waves and the reception of the reflected radio waves, then calculates the distance to the object using the measured time-distance.

Object recognition

Radar recognizes objects using radar coordinates at the time of radio wave emitted and the distance measurement results. In this process, radar creates an image of the cloud, so it can identify the shape and position of the object.

DJID certification for automotive radar

Automotive radar technology is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the distance, angle, or speed of an object. This technology is commonly used in vehicle to detect other vehicles, pedestrians, and other obstacles on the road.

Referring to the technical regulation of KEPMEN KOMINFO No 260 year 2024, automotive radar is listed on the category of intelligent transport system technology.

Regulatory control for automotive radar in Indonesia

As we already mentioned before, one of the allocation of radar in Indonesia is used for automotive industry. Vehicle parts with radar function will be defined as as telecommunications equipment. This is because in principle radar is using radio frequency waves for its working operation.

The existence of radar technology also needs to be controlled by the government so that it will not cause any interference with another telecommunications devices. For that reason, every automotive radar equipment must be certified before it is being imported and marketed in Indonesia.

Certification process will confirm if the equipment has met the technical standards from DJID as the regulatory control for telecommunication equipment in Indonesia. In general, following is the required testing for automotive radar related to DJID certification requirements.

RF testing

Based on the technical regulation of KEPMEN KOMINFO No. 260 year 2024, it is mentioned that the allowable frequency band for automotive radar in Indonesia is only band 24 GHz and 77 GHz. You can check the following table for the technical requirements.

Frequency bandOutput powerSpurious emissionTesting methodApplication
24 – 24.25 GHz≤ 20 dBmEN 302 858EN 302 858Automotive radar
76 – 77 GHz≤ 55 dBmEN 301 091-1EN 301 091-1 and/or EN 303 396Automotive radar

The sample requirement for RF test of automotive radar can be fulfilled by just sending a normal sample with continuous wave. Currently, BBPPT Lab is the only local testing laboratory that has the scope of automotive radar testing in Indonesia.

In general, the RF testing for automotive radar is carried out by measuring the transmission of the sample, also known as radiated testing. The radiated testing process for automotive radar is usually quite simple. It can be done by just turning on the sample (activate), and then the transmission will be measured through the spectrum analyzer.

EMC testing

Automotive radar equipment is generally supplied with DC power. It means that the equipment is supplied through vehicle’s power source that is equipped with a DC converter. Therefore, in many case, automotive radar equipment is still mandatory to conduct the EMC conducted at main terminal.

Compatibility of the automotive radar equipment must also be met by fulfilling the EMC test requirements. Automotive radars should meet the requirement that has been established on international EMC standard of CISPR32.

The EMC measurements are carried out based on testing parameter of radiated emission and conducted emission. EMC testing is important to ensure that automotive radar parts remain stable under varying operational conditions.
