DJID certification for remote keyless entry

The use of keyless entry is becoming more popular in the automotive industry nowadays. It is one of the modern features in most of today’s cars. Keyless entry technology allows car users to open and start their vehicles without having to use a physical key.

In this article we will discuss about keyless entry technology and its regulatory control in Indonesia.

What is keyless entry?

Keyless entry is a technological feature on a vehicle that allows users to open the car door without having to use a physical key. This feature usually uses a remote that is integrated with the vehicle. The vehicle can be opened simply by bringing the remote close to the vehicle.

Besides that, by using keyless entry technology, users do not need to insert a physical key into the key housing when they want to start their vehicle. Users can easily start the vehicle by simply pressing the start stop engine button. This feature works by using a signal from the vehicle’s remote (key fob).

How keyless entry works?

DJID certification for remote keyless entry

The keyless entry system works by utilizing radio frequency waves emitted from the car and the remote which will search for the radio waves. When the remote is within range of the car’s radio waves, the key fob will send its signal back to the car and the vehicle’s ECU will unlock the doors.

The same process also occurs when starting the vehicle. When the key fob is in the vehicle cabin located near the start stop engine button, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) will be able to start the vehicle’s engine automatically.

It can be concluded that keyless entry works in the following way:

  • Users get close to their vehicle with a remote connected to the vehicle’s keyless system
  • The car will detect the signal from the remote and respond according to the given command
  • The vehicle’s doors and engine will be activated only if the code sent by the remote matches

Advantages of keyless entry technology

Every modern technology will certainly provide advantages that can provide convenience for its users, including keyless entry technology.

Easy and practical access

It is undeniable that keyless technology makes it easier for vehicle users to open and lock vehicle doors. This technology is so practical to use because users do not need to report inserting the key into the vehicle door lock housing.

Better security performance

Currently, keyless technology in vehicles is equipped with a sophisticated security system. Vehicles with keyless technology are more difficult to steal because they have a transponder that communicates with the smart key fob via a unique code.

Disadvantages of keyless entry technology

Every modern technology will definitely has disadvantages as well, although it is not as many as its advantages.

Keyless remote can suddenly not working

One of the drawbacks of using keyless entry is that the key fob can suddenly die. The cause of the keyless remote not working is usually because the battery in the remote is dead. Therefore, routine maintenance is needed on the vehicle’s keyless remote.

Signal interference

Because keyless entry uses radio frequency waves for its operation, sometimes a signal interference can possibly happen. The signal will be very easily to be disturbed when the keyless remote is used in a location with full of other radio transmitter devices.

Regulatory control for keyless entry technology in Indonesia

As we have discussed before, keyless entry technology uses radio frequency waves for its operation. Because keyless remote will emit radio signals, so it requires for keyless remote to comply with the technical regulations proven by DJID certificate ownership. In Indonesia, keyless remote mostly use the frequency band of 433 MHz.

To ensure that keyless entry devices can function according to the applicable standards set by DJID, certification is needed for every keyless remote before it being used in Indonesia.

RF testing

Keyless remote needs to do radio frequency testing in order to ensure that the device uses the frequency band permitted in Indonesia. The frequency band that can be used for keyless remote in Indonesia is 433 – 434.79 MHz.

Referring to the technical regulation of the KEPMEN KOMINFO No 260 year 2024, this frequency band is included in the Low Power technology category and must meet the following technical requirements:

Frequency bandOutput powerSpurious emissionTesting method
433 – 434.79 MHz< 10 mWattEN 300 320EN 300 320

Usually, the required testing samples for keyless testing is a normal sample with continuous transmission. The frequency range measurement process can be done by pressing one of the buttons on the keyless remote. The radio waves that appear can easily be detected through spectrum analyzer.

EMC testing

Keyless remote also need to do EMC testing to ensure that the remote will not cause any interference when it being used with other devices. Because keyless remote uses non-rechargeable battery as its power supply, so the required EMC test result is only radiated emission.
