IP phone: operation and regulatory control in Indonesia

The increasing need of business communication tools has led to the development of more advanced communication tools, especially in today’s digital era. Technological advancement make the business communication process become more efficient. In the past, humans communicated by sending paper letters, decades later telephone communication emerged. IP phone is one of the type of communication tools available in this digital era. This type of communication tool is a hardware-based telephone system that uses an internet connection to send and receive data and voice.

In this article we will discuss all about IP phone and its regulatory control in Indonesia.

What is IP phone?

Internet Protocol phone or IP phone is a hardware-based telephone system that can transmit voice using internet protocols. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an internet protocol that can be used to communicate with voice. Therefore, in most cases IP phone is also known as VoIP.

In the IP phone technology, analog voice is converted into digital signals and then transmitted over the internet network. Users can make voice and/or video calls through an internet connection that connected to the IP phone network. The IP phone technology has several advantages compared to conventional telephones, such as cheaper call costs, the ability to make long-distance calls easily, and advanced features.

How does IP phone works?

The communication process with IP phone devices is quite similar to regular telephone devices. The difference is that the IP phone device transmits its voice using an internet network instead of a cable like a regular telephone device.

In carrying out its transmission, the IP phone converts the user’s voice from an analog audio signal into digital data. After being converted, the digital data is sent to the recipient via an internet network such as LAN, WAN, or router and switch.

In addition to making voice calls with an internet connection, IP phone devices are usually equipped with more advance features such as sending voice messages, instant messages, and video calls. Below is an example of an IP phone service architecture.

Benefits of IP phone

IP phone technology has many benefits, especially for companies to support business communication process. Here are some benefits companies can get by implementing IP phone technology.

Communication efficiency

Integrating IP phone with business applications allows companies to combine various communication channels such as voice, text messaging, video, and conferencing in one unified platform. This allows employees to communicate more efficiently and easily without having to switch between different applications or devices.

Higher productivity

With IP phone integration, companies can also increase employee productivity. Employees can access phone features such as conference calling, call transfer, and direct calling from the business applications they use every day. This allows them to carry out their business tasks more efficiently and quickly.

Cost savings

Integrating IP phone with business applications can help companies save on communication costs. By using the internet network for voice calls, companies can reduce expensive long-distance or international calls. In addition, this integration can also reduce the cost of traditional telephone infrastructure such as physical telephone hardware.

Regulatory control for IP phone in Indonesia

IP phone devices are categorized as non-radio devices that still need to be registered the DJID certification. IP phone telecommunications devices must comply with the applicable technical regulation of PERDIR POSTEL No. 29 year 2009. Referring to this technical regulation, the specifications of IP phone devices include technical requirements such as construction requirements, power supply, software, and EMC requirements.

Construction requirements for IP phone

IP phone devices must meet the construction requirements in the form of a physical interface, as follows:

  • IP phone devices must use one of the ports: RJ-45 8-wire connector, RJ-11 port for PSTN telephone networks.
  • The IP phone device interface standards are: IEEE802.3 10BASE-T, IEEE802.3u 100BASE-TX, IEEE 802.11 (radio-based only).
