Indonesia opens frequency band 6 GHz for Wifi 7

As we know that Wifi technology has developed within several generations. In 2024, Wifi Alliance has launched the 7th generation Wifi technology. Wifi 7 is the latest generation of wireless internet network technology that uses the IEEE 802.11be standard. It is the successor to generations of Wifi 6 and Wifi 6E. In order to get the benefits of the latest generation of Wifi technology (Wifi 6E and Wifi 7), the Wifi frequency band of 6 GHz is added in Indonesia as mentioned on the regulation of PERMEN KOMDIGI No. 2 year 2025.

In this article we will discuss about Wifi 7 in the frequency band of 6 GHz and its impact to certification process in Indonesia.

Class permits for Wifi 7

The regulation of PERMEN KOMINFO No. 2 year 2015 has listed all allowable radio frequency bands in Indonesia called class permits. Basically, class permit is a permit to use the radio frequency spectrum attached to telecommunications devices that have met technical standards. Based on this regulation, the 6 GHz frequency band for Wifi 7 has been added in Indonesia.

The fulfillment of technical standards requirements is carried out through certification of telecommunications devices in Indonesia called DJID certification. This certification is a document stating the conformity of the type of telecommunications device against the established technical standards in Indonesia.

Terms of use for radio frequency spectrum include Wifi 7

There are several terms of use that need to be considered by business actors related to the use of radio frequency spectrum based on class permits in Indonesia.

  • Shared use: the use of radio frequency spectrum based on class permits is harmoniously shared between users, in terms of time, region, and technology. Shared use is implemented based on coordination between radio frequency spectrum users.
  • No interference: users of radio frequency spectrum with class permits are prohibited from causing interference that can be harmful to other users.
  • No protection: no interference protection from other users, including IPFR (Radio Frequency Band Permit) and ISR (Radio Station Permit) which receive protection.
  • Certified devices: users must use devices that have met technical standards and possess certificates.
  • No device modification: users are prohibited from modifying the device in a way that results in changes to the technical specifications of radio frequency spectrum transmission.

Use of the 6 GHz frequency band for Wifi 7 in Indonesia

Currently, the 6 GHz frequency band in Indonesia has been allocated for several technological uses. For example, the frequency band of microwave links technology is allocated in the frequency range of 6425 – 7110 MHz. In addition, there is also a fixed satellite service that uses the frequency range of 5925 – 6725 MHz.

Wifi uses a radio frequency spectrum based on class permits where the radio frequency permit is attached to the DJID certificate of the telecommunication device. Previously, the frequency band for Wifi technology was only allowed in the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands.

In order to get the benefits of the latest generation of Wifi technology (Wifi 6E and Wifi 7), now the 6 GHz frequency band was added for Wifi based on the technical regulation of KEPMEN KOMDIGI No. 12 year 2025. The allocation of the frequency range for additional Wifi bands in Indonesia is 5925 – 6425 MHz.

Telecommunication devices in the form of Wifi 7 access points must meet the following software/firmware requirements:

  • Wifi 7 access point is forbidden to have a feature to change the country code.
  • Wifi 7 access point is forbidden to have a feature to change the working frequency, RF output power and/or other radio frequency parameters so that they do not comply with technical standards.
  • Changes (upgrading or downgrading) against the software or firmware installed on the device are prohibited from changing the working frequency, RF output power and/or other radio frequency parameters so that they do not comply with technical standards.
