TEC India Publishes Draft of Essential Requirements for the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz Bands

The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) of India has published the draft of Essential Requirements (ER) for equipment operating in the frequency bands of 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. This draft ER covers all types of Wi-Fi Access Point, Wi-Fi Controller, Wi-Fi Base Station and Point to Point Systems operating in 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz frequency bands. The comments on the draft ER can be submitted until 6 June 2026 during its public consultation period. In this article we will discuss all important notes from the draft of Essential Requirements (ER) for equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands.

Key Notes of Essential Requirements for 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz Bands

The draft of Essential Requirements (ER) for equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands covers all types of Wi-Fi Access Point, Wi-Fi Controller, Wi-Fi Base Station and Point to Point Systems. Refer to the draft ER, the products have the following variants:

  1. PTP PMP Wireless Access Equipment 2.4, 5 or 6 GHz
  2. Wi-Fi Access Points and CPE
  3. WLAN Controller Equipment

In general, this draft ER includes some technical requirements for radio conformance, EMC, electrical safety and relevant interfaces of the equipment. The table below shows the parameters of radio conformance for equipment operating in delicensed frequency bands 2.4, 5 or 6 GHz based on the Annexure-G3 of this draft ER.

Impact on India Type Approval

Implementation of the draft Essential Requirements (ER) for equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands may change some technical requirements for TEC MTCTE certification in India. During the public consultation, stakeholders can submit their inputs and comments on this draft ER via email to adetr.tec@gov.in, with copies to ddgsat.tec@gov.in and dirr2.tec@gov.in until 6 June 2026. This draft ER for equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands will be named as ER No. TEC5943XXXX.

Conclusion

The implementation of the draft ER for equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands may affect on the type approval process in India. Therefore, doing early mitigation for adjustment and preparation to upcoming new technical requirements for equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz may be required.
