Malaysia MCMC permit LTE B31, LTE B39 and 5G n79 for type approval certification

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a new Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004 regarding additional bands for LTE and 5G NR technologies in Malaysia. These new additional cellular bands are the specific radio frequency ranges operating globally based on International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) standards. In total, there are three new bands for both LTE and 5G NR operating in IMT bands: LTE Band 31 (450 MHz), LTE Band 39 (1900 MHz) and 5G Band 79 (4700 MHz). By issuing the Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004, MCMC has permitted the type approval certification for communication equipment operating in these new IMT bands in Malaysia.

In this article we will discuss all important notes from the new Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004 especially the usage condition and certification requirements.

Key notes of new Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004 for new IMT bands

The new Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004 is issued for adding new IMT bands of LTE Band 31 (450 MHz), LTE Band 39 (1900 MHz) and 5G Band 79 (4700 MHz) to the current list. In addition to new IMT bands, the contents need to be highlighted from implementation of this new Announcement are usage condition and certification requirements. The table below shows key points for the implementation these new IMT bands.

Treatment for approved equipment

For the approved equipment which also support LTE Band 31, LTE Band 39 and 5G Band 79, the existing Malaysia type approval certificate is still valid. However, if manufacturers want to activate and use the LTE Band 31, LTE Band 39 and 5G Band 79 in Malaysia, then they need to obtain new certificate by including these new IMT bands.

The issuance of Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004 will not affect other type approval certification requirements, including import permits and self-labelling, shall follow the normal and current processes. The implementation of these new IMT bands come to affect by the time the Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004 was issued on 3 September 2025.

Conclusion

Additional of these new IMT bands signaling that MCMC is beginning to encourage the use of IMT-based network technology in many industries. This new Announcement No. SQASI/CMCS/1/25/0004 can drives the acceleration of Malaysia’s digital transformation while ensuring product compliance with MCMC’s technical standards.

It is important for manufacturers and importers to understand the impact of this new announcement so that they can adapt their certification strategies early.
