Ethernet switch and its type approval requirements in Indonesia

In the modern network ecosystem, ethernet switch has become an essential component that facilitates data exchange and manages data traffic between devices quickly and efficiently.

In this article we will discuss all about the ethernet switch and its type approval requirements in Indonesia.

What is ethernet switch?

Ethernet switch is a device in a computer network used to connect several devices such as computers, servers, printers, or other network devices, in a local network (LAN).

Ethernet switch functions

The main function of an ethernet switch is to efficiently transfer a data from one device to another in a network using Media Access Control (MAC) address. In addition, the ethernet switch also has address learning capabilities where all MAC address that have ever been connected will be stored and learned.

However, many people still assume that switch and router are the same components. In practice, the router becomes an important component for internet connection, while the switch is only used to connect between devices. Usually, big offices with hundreds of computers will definitely need ethernet switches for networks and data center.

Type of ethernet switch

Unmanaged switch

This switch is the most affordable type, and is often used in small-scale offices or housing. Its function is to manage the flow of data between printers and a number of computers between other devices.

Managed switch

This switch has an API that is easy for users to use in order to perform configurations, such as using the console, interfacing, and much more.

Smart switch

This switch carries web-based regulations and configurations. The advantage is that this switch is able to manage network needs automatically.

Enterprise managed switch

This switch is the type of switch most often used by big companies for network monitoring and configuration because it is capable of managing a large number of devices.

DJID certification for ethernet switch

Ethernet switch is a type of non-radio devices that is mandatory to apply for DJID certification. This obligation is stated in regulation of KEPMEN KOMINFO No. 60 year 2022 about the technical standard for ethernet network telecom devices in Indonesia.

Based on the regulation, ethernet network telecom device is a device that has two or more ethernet interfaces in accordance with the IEEE 802.3 standard and used to connect two or more devices in a network via these interfaces.

Apart from ethernet switch, products such as router and firewall also fall into ethernet network telecom devices. Following is an example of an ethernet network device configuration.

Testing for ethernet switch

Before the regulation of KEPMEN KOMINFO No. 60 year 2022 was issued, in the past ethernet switch is required to conduct a functional testing. Fortunately, this requirement now can be replaced by submitting an ethernet conformity statement letter during the certification process.

Therefore, right now the testing requirements for ethernet switch is quite a bit easier compared to before. Currently, the required testing for certification of ethernet switch are EMC, Electrical Safety, and Laser Safety.

EMC testing

In general, EMC testing parameters for ethernet switch are the same as other telecom devices. However, because ethernet switch mostly has an ethernet port, so it is necessary to conduct EMC testing at the telecommunication ports. Type of ethernet port widely used on ethernet switch is the RJ45 port.

The RJ45 port is a data port that used for ethernet or serial connections with an 8-position, 8-contact (8P8C) jack. This port is used to connect a network cable to a device such as a computer, router, or switch.

EMC test for ethernet switch must be conducted at DJID’s recognized EMC laboratory. The EMC test results should pass the following CISPR32 testing parameters.

Testing ParameterSpecification
Radiated emission low30 MHz – 1 GHz
Radiated emission high1 GHz – 6 GHz
Conducted emission at main terminal power150 kHz – 30 MHz
Conducted at telecommunication port150 kHz – 30 MHz

Electrical safety testing

Electrical safety test is conducted based on international standard of IEC 60950, including for ethernet switch devices. There are two testing parameters for electrical safety testing: touch current and electrical strength.

Same as the EMC, electrical safety test also must be conducted at DJID’s recognized electrical safety laboratory. The electrical safety test results should pass the following IEC 60950 testing parameters.

Testing ParameterSpecification
Touch current< 3.5 mA
Electrical strengthNo power breakdown at 1500 V

Laser safety testing

Ethernet switch and its type approval requirements in Indonesia

Laser safety test is required for ethernet switch that has an SFP port. This port is a slot on an ethernet network device where an SFP module is installed. The SFP transceiver, also known as an SFP module, is a metal component that can convert gigabit electrical signals into optical signals. This component is used to connect optical network cables for data transmission.

Currently, DJID only accepts laser safety test report issued by local laboratory. So far, there are three labs in Indonesia that have a scope of laser safety testing: Telkom Bandung, Sucofindo, and BBPPT Lab.

The required testing sample for laser safety test is an ethernet switch unit as the end product to be certified and a compatible SFP module. Generally, laser safety test reports are issued under the model name of the SFP module. The laser safety test will refer to international standard of IEC 60825.
